historical notes Thomas Dolan was an art collector, dry goods merchant, woolen manufacturer (Thomas Dolan & Company, Keystone Knitting Mills), menswear manufacturer, financier, public utilities and traction developer (Brush Electric Light Company and Philadelphia Traction Company).

Dolan was a trustee of the Pennsylvania Museum and School of Industrial Art; today the school is known as University of the Arts and the museum is known as the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Dolan lent work to the Philadelphia International Exhibition of 1876.

Dolan was a member of the Philadelphia Textile Manufacturers Association and a founding member of the Union League in Philadelphia.

He served on the directorship of the School of Design for Women, the Merchants’ National Bank, the Delaware Mutual Insurance Company, and the Philadelphia Traction Company, the presidency of the Manufacturers’ Club of Philadelphia, the Metropolitan Street Railway Company of New York, consolidated Traction companies of New Jersey, the Distilling Company of America, and other corporations.

Likewise, Dolan was the president of the Quaker City Dye Company, the United Gas Improvement Company and the Brush Electric Light Company.

According to The Art Treasures of America, Dolan owned works by L. Bakalowicz, Em. Béranger, A. Beyschlag, Ch. Chaplin, Ch. Hue, Lanfant de Metz, L. Lassalle, I. Leon Y Escosura, T. Moran, C. Pécrus, G. Petti, P. F. Rothermel, A. Schreyer, J. Tissot, C. Troyon, and J. Worms.
