Joseph Philipson (1773–1844) was a businessman who dealt in fur, lead, real estate, banking (Bank of St. Louis), beer (St Louis Brewery), dry goods and was a collector of Old Master paintings and prints.
According to probate records Philipson’s collection of 390 oil paintings and prints which included work by, among others, Rubens, Rembrandt, Velasquez, Titian, Van Dyck, Veronese, Zuccarelli, del Sarto, Gaspar Poussin, Paulus Potter, Murillo, Frans Hals, and Salvator Rosa.
