historical notes Gouverneur Kemble was an art collector, patron, congressman (1837–41), railroad man and merchant (founder of West Point Iron and Cannon Foundry).

Kemble's collection included paintings by, among others, Asher B Durand, Robert Weir, John Singleton Copley, Gilbert Stuart and drawings and prints by Raphael, Rembrandt, Rubens, Reynolds, Cole and Durand.

Kembles' collection included copies after Old Master paintings, engravings after Old Master's and plaster casts of ancient sculptures.
