historical notes Stuart Cary Welch was a connoisseur, curator and collector of Indian, Islamic and Persian Art.

Welch was a curator emeritus of Islamic and Later Indian art at the Harvard Art Museum, and from 1979 to 1987, he served as a special consultant in charge of the department of Islamic art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

Part of Cary’s collection was auction in 2011 at Sotheby’s London auction for about £21 million—over four times the estimated sale price. Originally estimated to sell for £3.5 to 5.3 million for 164 lots, the auction broke a Sotheby’s London record for Islamic art.
