historical notes Captain John A. Scudder was an art collector, businessman, banker (St. Louis Trust Co.), president of the Memphis Packet Company (1870), and president of the St. Louis's Merchant Exchange (1877).

Scudder was a Kentucky native born in Mason County. His father was a physician and moved his family to St. Louis in 1837.

Scudder was an original incorporator of the St. Louis and Memphis Packet Co. in 1859.

A St. Louis fire in 1891 destroyed Scudder's home.

According to The Art Treasures of America, Scudder owned works by L. Alvarez, J. Bertrand, G. Boldini, N. Hagborg, George Inness, J. J. Lefebvre, J. G. Meyer von Bremen, M. Poirson, J. E. Saintain, J. Schuerenberg, J. Tapiro, and O. van Thoren.
