historical notes John W McCoy was a Baltimore merchant and art collector. His gift of William Henry Rinehart’s Clytie in 1873 started the Peabody Institute’s Gallery of Art.

McCoy left the Peabody his art collection which included work by William Henry Rinehart, Thomas Hovenden (1840-95), Hugh Bolton Jones (1848-1927), and Arthur Quartley.

According to The Art Treasures of America, McCoys owned works by J. G. Brown, M. Ezekiel, Thos. Hovenden, H. Bolton Jones, J. F. Kensett, E. Lambinet, T. McGrath, F. B. Meyer, P. Moran, A. Quartley, and Dr. A. J. Volck.
