historical notes David Lloyd Kreeger was a lawyer, businessman (retired chairman of GEICO, the Government Employees Insurance Company), an art collector, patron, philanthropist, and amateur musician.

Founder of the Washington Opera (1980) and past chairman of the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, Kreeger served on the boards of the Arena Stage, Dumbarton Oaks and the National Gallery, Georgetown University and the Peabody Institute of Music and as was a trustee emeritus of American University.

He and his wife, Carmen nee Matanzo y Jaramillo (1909–2003), amassed an art collection of paintings, drawings, sculptures, drawings and prints. Their Washington DC home was built by Philip Johnson in the 1960’s to showcase their art collection.

The collection focused on European and American paintings and sculpture from the 1850’s forward and included work by, among others, Vincent Van Gogh, Piet Mondrian, Claude Monet, Henry Moore, Jacques Lipchitz, August Renoir, Amedeo Modigliani, Fernand Léger, Wassily Kandinsky, Hans Hoffman, Sam Gilliam, Edgar Degas, Charles-François Daubigny, Jean-Batiste-Camille Corot, Paul Cézanne, George Braque, Eugène Boudin, Pierre Bonnard, Lucien Wercollier, Joan Miró and Milton Avery.

While the bulk of the Kreeger collection was western in origin it also included works of art from Asia, West and Central Africa.

The Kreeger’s had two children; Carol Ingall of Chicago and Peter Kreeger of Potomac, MD.
