Anita May Baldwin McClaughry, an iconic figure in the annals of California’s history, was the daughter of Elias Jackson “Lucky” Baldwin, a prominent pioneer tycoon and owner of Rancho Santa Anita. Anita’s life was marked by a deep appreciation for the arts and a commitment to philanthropy. Her legacy extends beyond her familial connections, primarily through her remarkable art collection. Anita’s Anoakia estate, a palatial mansion nestled in the scenic Santa Anita hills, the mansion's interiors bore the unmistakable imprint of her discerning sensibilities, harmoniously blending priceless treasures from Chinese temples, Persian rugs, and a diverse array of paintings spanning ancient and modern art. She commissioned Maynard Dixon to create murals for her home, which helped greatly to launch his career.
Beyond her role as an art collector, Anita was a woman of many talents and interests. She composed over 50 published songs and even authored a cookbook, The Pantophagist. Anita's philanthropic endeavors were equally noteworthy, as she served as an honorary colonel during World War I and played a pivotal role in supporting the war effort. She also founded the Anita M. Baldwin Hospital for Babies in Los Angeles. |
