In 1932, inspired by the Los Angeles Olympiad, Merlo was named Honorary Curator of Classical Art. In 1933, he was elected President of the Los Angeles Art Association, the primary organization behind the efforts to establish a permanent location for the Los Angeles Museum. His collection was catalogued in the Los Angeles’s museums 1932 publication Los Angeles Museum: The Gallery of Classical Art.
