historical notes Altman Galleries, also known as Altman Antiques, was owned by Ralph C. Altman. With his wife Patricia, Altman collected and dealt English furniture and tribal art. Through their efforts, the Altmans are credited with introducing southern Californians to so-called “primitive” art in the early 1950’s. Ralph Altman became a lecturer on North American Indian and African arts at UCLA and was the founder and director of the Fowler Museum, helping to build the Museum’s holdings of non-Western art into one of the most distinguished collections in the world. Patricia Altman served as curator of folk art and textiles at the Fowler Museum.
