Mayer studied at the University of Wisconsin, Art Institute of Chicago, Columbia University, and with Ralph Johonnot. She taught art at the University of Utah (1913-1922) and then moved to California where she was on the faculty at the California College of Arts & Crafts (Oakland) and San Francisco State Teachers College in the early 1930s. In 1945 she moved to Redlands, CA where she remained until her death on May 23, 1955.
