Alongside his wife Bernardine, Sir Daniel Donohue, an art collector and philanthropist, founded the Daniel Murphy Foundation in 1957, a heartfelt tribute to her father, dedicated to advancing important Roman Catholic and philanthropic causes. Daniel's passion for art and culture was evident in the wide range of artworks he collected. From antiquities and Old Master paintings to early European works of art, tapestries, Italian Renaissance furniture, silver, objets de vertu, and even occasional 20th-century decorative pieces, his collection of over 1,000 art works was a testament to his discerning taste and appreciation for diversity. In April 2011, the world marveled at his exceptional collection as Bonhams & Butterfields conducted the extraordinary auction of the Collection of Sir Daniel Donohue. Highlights included a highly sought after Roman carved stone panel of Mithras Tauroctonus from the 2nd/3rd century A.D.; a group of three Spanish Colonial polychrome decorated carved wood crèche figures, 19th century; an Italian micromosaic panel depicting the Roman Forum, possibly by Domenico Moglia, circa 1850; a pair of Venetian Rococo parcel gilt and blue painted consoles, third-quarter 18th century; an Italian carved marble strigillated sarcophagus, after the antique, early 16th century; a magnificent pair of early Victorian silver wine coolers, Reily & Storer, London, 1839; and a Austrian silver gilt enamel and gem set carved rock crystal covered cup modeled in the form of a fabulous bird, among others. |
