historical notes Gordon W. Bailey is a scholar and collector of African American Art created by artists born between 1900 and 1959. Bailey's collection includes drawings, paintings, sculptures and mixed media works of art by African American artists including Daniel Pressley, Du Plenty, Sam Doyle, Purvis Young, Thornton Dial, Herbert Singleton, Clementine Hunter, Sister Gertrude Morgan, Minnie Evans, Roy Ferdinand, Lonnie Holley, Eddie Arning, Willie Birch, Archie Byron, David Choe, Joe Light, Charlie Lucas,  J. B. Murray, O. L. Samuels, Welmon Sharlhorne, Henry Speller, Jimmy Lee Sudduth, James “Son” Thomas, Willie White, Leroy Almon, and others. Bailey has given works of art to the following museums: The California African American Museum, Perez Art Museum in Miami, The Speed Art Museum, The Georgia Museum of Art at the University of Georgia, and High Museum of Art.
