Stanley Joseph Seeger was a collector of fine and decorative arts, author and the heir to a timber, railroad and oil fortune.

His grandfather was William Buchanan (1849-1923) who amassed great wealth via timber, railroad and oil ventures in Texas, Arkansas and Louisiana.

Seeger collected and sold work by, among others, Henry Fuseli, J. M. W. Turner, Paul Gauguin, Pablo Picasso, George Braque, Juan Miró, Egon Schiele, Max Beckmann, Graham Sutherland, Malcolm Morley, Howard Hodgkin, Jasper Johns, and Ben Nicholson. He would build one collection sell it and build another.

In 1993 Seeger sold 88 Picasso through Sotheby’s in New York for a total of 34 million dollars. The Sale included Picasso’s Glass, Bouquet, Guitar and Bottle (1919), Playing Cards, Package of Tobacco, Bottle and Glass (1914), Women and Children by the Sea (1932), Study for the Actor and Two Profiles of Fernande (1904-05), Reclining Woman (1932), and The Faun Among the Branches (1946).

In 2001 Stanley sold a collection for 54 million dollars which included work by, among others, Braque, Miró, Bacon and Schiele. Seeger sold his collection of Gauguin prints via Sotheby’s in March, 2011.
