historical notes Ralph Kirk Askew was an art dealer who began his career in 1927 with Durlacher Brothers.

In 1937, Askew became the owner of Durlacher Brothers and ran the business from New York until ca. 1969.

Askew and his wife Constance, neé Constance Atwood and the former wife of Arthur McComb, held a Bohemian salon every Sunday during the “R” Months at their brownstone at 166 East 61st Street. New York’s notable avant-garde attended: writers, poets, musicians, artists and dealers alike participated.

Those who frequented the Askew “Saloon” included, among others, Philip Johnson, Carl Van Vechten, Pierre Matisse, Marie Harriman, Aaron Copland, Joseph Losey, Emily Hahn, Archibald Macleish, Paul and Jane Bowles, and Virgil Thompson, Aaron Copland, George Balanchine, Lincoln Kirstein, Marc Blitzstein, and Agnes de Mille.
