historical notes Janet Wurtzburger was married to the Baltimore real estate investor Alan Wurtzburger (1900-1963). Together with her husband she collected Nineteenth-century and Contemporary sculpture, African, Oceanic, and Ancient American art. Janet continued to collect Nineteenth-century and Contemporary sculpture after the death of her husband.

Their Nineteenth-century and Contemporary sculpture collection included work by, among others, Max Bill, Henry Moore, Émile Antoine Bourdelle, Alexander Calder, Raymond Duchamp-Villon, Jabov Epstein, Pablo Gargallo, Gaston Lachaise, Henri Laurens, Jacques Lipschitz, Giacomo Manzu, Gerhard Marcks, Marino Marini, Isamu Noguchi, Germaine Richier, François-Auguste-René Rodin, Fritz Wotruba, and Ossip Sadkine.

The Wurtzburgers gave their first gift to the Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA) in 1955 with 136 African Art objects. Over 423 African, Oceanic and pre-Columbian art objects from the Wurtzburger collection were given to the BMA.
In 1958 the BMA’s Wurtzburger Gallery of the Primitive Arts opened, followed by the Alan and Janet Wurtzburger Gallery for the Arts of Africa, the Americans and Oceania in 1982, and finally the Janet and Alan Wurtzburger Sculpture Garden in 1980.
