historical notes Henry Jacob Lutcher Stark was an American Western art collector, businessman (banking, insurance, manufacturing, real estate, petroleum and lumber industries) and philanthropist.

Together with his third wife, nee Nelda Childers, Stark actively collected crystal, porcelain, rare botanical books, prints and Western art with a focus of Southwestern artists.

Stark's collection included paintings by William Herbert "Buck"Dunton, Ernest Martin Hennings, Eanger Irving Couse, and Joseph Henry Sharp among others.

Stark and his wife founded the Nelda C. and H.J. Lutcher Stark Foundation in 1961 (Stark served as chairman until his death).

The Stark Foundation established the Stark Museum of Art, constructed the Frances Ann Lutcher Theater for the Performing Arts, restored The W.H. Stark House, and support programs of the Stark Museum of Art, The W.H. Stark House, the Lutcher Theater, and Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center, as well as through the support of charitable programming in and around Southeast Texas (for more information please visit the foundations website at http://www.starkfoundation.org/).

Stark's mother, Miriam Lutcher Stark, was also a collector of fine and decorative arts. His first wife, nee Nita Hill, died in 1939.
