historical notes
|
Art critic and dealer Andre Level was an important collector and early supporter of Matisse and Picasso.
Under Level’s leadership, a group of thirteen men invested in building a collection of contemporary art called La Peau de l’Ours. For ten years Level bought works by Picasso, Matisse, Gauguin, van Gogh, Vuillard, Piot, Derain, Friesz, Denis, Vallotton and Dufy for this collection, which was sold at auction in March 1914.
The sale was a major public event and a financial success.
