John P. Townsend's collection of etchings and engravings were sold by the American Art Association in 1912.
The collection included work by, among others, Rembrandt van Ryn, Albrecht Dürer, Charles Meryon, James A. M. Whistler, Agostino Carracci, Lucas Van Leyden, Giambattista Piranisi, Anthony Van Dyck, William Hogarth, Robert Nanteuil, Adriaen Van Ostade, Mariano Fortuny, Charles Jacques, Jean François Millet, and J. L. G. Gérôme.
