Josephine Ayer, nee Josephine Mellen Southwick, was an art collector married Dr. James C. Ayer (1819–1878).
They had three children: Frederick Fanning Ayer (1851–1924), Henry Southwick Ayer (1853–1932), and Lesley Josephine Ayer Pearson (1855–1928).
The Ayers lived in Lowell, MA, and after the death of Mr. Ayer, Mrs. Ayer moved to New York City and lived at 5 West 57th Street. In 1888, she moved to Paris where she died in 1898.
