Francis (Franz) O. Matthiessen was an art collector and sugar manufacturer (Treasurer American Sugar Refining Company; F.O. Matthiessen & Wiechers Sugar Refining Co.).
The Matthiessen Collection included work by, among others, Peter Paul Rubens, Adolf Schreyer, Joseph Mallord William Turner, Constant Troyon, Tiziano Vecelli, Martin Rico, Rembrandt Van Ryn, Bartolomé Estéban Murillo, Raimundo de Madrazo, Tito Lessi, Cesare Maccari, Francesco Guardi, Jules Dupré, Carlo Dolci, Charles Daubigny, Salomon Corrodi, Aelbert Cuyp, Jean Baptiste Camille Corôt, Jules Breton, Rosa Bonheur, Titian, and Ludwig Knaus.
The American Art Association auctioned paintings from his collection in 1902, and the Fifth Avenue Art Galleries sold his decorative arts and textiles in 1904.
