historical notes John Francis Count McCormack was an operatic tenor, naturalized American citizen, and an art collector.

McCormack collected paintings and rare violins. He owned work attributed by, among others, Rembrandt van Rijn, François Boucher, Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, J. Francis Murphy, Frans Hals, David Teniers, Mary Carlisle, Walter Dean Grosbeck, Auguste Rodin, Sir William Orpen, John Singer Sargent, Sir Henry Raeburn, Aelbert Cuyp, James McNeill Whistler, Narcisse Diaz de la Peña, and Mario Korbel.

McCormack first rented then purchased Moore Abbey, which had belonged to Lord Drogheda, stocked it with his art collection, and lived there from 1925-1939.

McCormack married Lily Foley (1886-1971) in 1906 and they had two children: Cyril McCormack (1907-1990) and Gwendolen McCormack Pyke (1908-1996).
