Erhard Weyhe was an art and rare book dealer, collector, publisher and founder of E. Weyhe, Inc., in 1918 at 710 Lexington Avenue. At the initial location the front end of the store featured an art bookstore and the back end served as an art gallery.
In 1923, Weyhe purchased a five story building at 794 Lexington Avenue, here he relocated his business and in the new location the bookstore occupied the first floor of the building, the art gallery the second, and the top floors were used as living quarters for Wyhe and his family (wife Hannah McCarthy Weyhe, 1889–¬¬1970, daughter Gertrude Weyhe Dennis, 1915–2003, and son, Arthur Weyhe, 1918– ).
The gallery exhibited, sold and published prints, drawings, water colors, photographs, sculptures and paintings.
Weyhe worked with and sold work by, among others, Eugène Atget, Edward Weston, Brett Weston, Childe Hassam, John Sloan, Walter Pach, Reginald Marsh, Leon Underwood, Howard Cook, Peggy Bacon, Emil Ganso, Jules Pascin, Rockwell Kent, John Flannagan, Alexander Calder, Simon Molesio, Diego Rivera, José Clemente Orozco, Rufino Tamayo, David Alfaro Siqueiros, George Biddle, Rembrandt, Goya, Delacroix, Piranesi, H. Daumier, Renoir, and Manet.
