historical notes Mary Salyes Booker Braga was a philanthropist, horse breeder, conservationist, art collector, connoisseur, and patron (Julian Barrow).

Braga collected both fine (paintings and drawings) and decorative arts (English furniture, porcelains, silver, etc.) and her collection included work by, among others, Sir Alfred Munning, Edgar Degas, Jean Leon Gérôme, Bosboom, Aaron Shikler, Sir George Clausen, and Victoria Dubourg.

The collection was sold via Sotheby’s New York on Oct. 18-20, 2015.

In 1943, Braga married the sugar baron Bernardo Rionda Braga 1911–1986 (Czarnikow-Rionda Company, Director and Vice President, 1946–1969; Francisco Sugar Group, Director and President,1954–1970).

They had three children: David (Manhattan), and Ames (Millbrook, N.Y.) and a daughter, Pamela Drexel Brown (d. 2005) of Washington. Braga was a member of the Colony Club.
