While her husband was serving as the appointed General Receiver of Customs in Monrovia, Liberia (1923-1929), together they formed a collection of works by indigenous artists from ethnic groups in the interior of the country such as the Gola, Vai, Dan, Kpelle, and Mende tribes. Forty-six works of art from their collection were transferred to the Baltimore Museum of Art in 1988, by their son, Robert Bruce Bussell and his wife, Catherine O’Carroll Bussel of Arlington, VA (41 were accepted as gifts and 5 were museum purchases).
