historical notes August Rütten was an art collector, member of the New-York Stock Exchange, capitalist, banker (Rütten & Bonn, dissolved 1878), and at one point the Director of the Northern Pacific Railroad.

Rütten's wife, Helene Heidelbach Rütten, sold his collection of Modern paintings at the Fifth Avenue Art Galleries (Ortgies & Co.) on February 12, 1896.

The collection included work by, among others, Charles François Daubigny, Narcisse Virgile Diaz de la Peña, Etiene Prosper Bern-Bellecour, Jean-Baptiste Robbie, Théodore Rousseau, Jean-Léon Gérôme, Jules Dupré, Jean Ernest Aubert, and Antoni Casanova Estorach.
