Stephan Bourgeois was a New York City art dealer and advisor. Bourgeois came to the United Stated in 1911 (naturalized U.S. Citizen, 1920). He opened his own art gallery, Bourgeois Galleries, in 1914, and it closed in 1932.
Bourgeois lent work by Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890), Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919), Edouard Manet (1832-1883), and A. Monticelli to New York’s International Exhibition of Modern Art in 1913. He served as an advisor for the Canadian collector William C. van Horne (1843-1915), and for Adolph and Sam Lewishon ; authoring a catalogue for the Adolph Lewisohn Collection.
In 1921, Bourgeois married the dancer, adopted daughter of Angela Isadora Duncan (1877-1927), Maria-Theresa Kruger (1895-1987, m. 1921); they had two sons, Rano (1922-2003) and Feodor (b. 1923).
