Darrell Walker is not only known for his successful career in basketball but also for his impressive collection of art, mostly made by Black artists. As a former Arkansas Razorback, 10-year National Basketball Association veteran, and longtime coach, he has acquired an extensive assemblage of art pieces that reflect African American culture. Walker's passion for art collecting began in the early 1990s, and his first pieces were bought from George N'Namdi's gallery and included works by renowned artists such as Jacob Lawrence, Romare Bearden, and Robert Colescott. Over the years, the collection grew to include artists such as Charles White, Norman Lewis, Juan Logan, James Phillips, Herbert Gentry, Joyce Wellman, Ed Clark, Al Loving, Rashid Johnson, Julie Mehretu, and Radcliffe Bailey, and Walker has built personal relationships with artists such as Sam Gilliam, Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, and Jacob Lawrence. His collection includes works in various media, from mixed media to serigraphs and lithographs, and he has donated pieces to the Arkansas Arts Center and Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville. |
