Patrick Diamond is art collector from Columbia, South Carolina. He met his wife, Judy, at Boston University in 1968, and together they developed a passion for acquiring art after spending a year living and volunteering in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The experience proved to be life-changing for Patrick, as he became interested in acquiring all types of African art, which resulted in hundreds of pieces being brought back to the United States. While the Diamonds gave away much of the art they had acquired, they kept enough to decorate their apartment in Williamstown, Massachusetts, which eventually led to the beginning of a much larger collection.
The Diamonds have about 175 pieces in their collection, which cover four different themes: history, music, family and Christianity, and how each ties into African-American culture and identity. Female representation is strongly present throughout the collection, and some of the more renowned artists featured include Romare Bearden and the late Jacob Lawrence. The Diamonds' collection served as the basis for “A Creative Journey: The Collection of Judy and Patrick Diamond,” an exhibit shown at the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African American Arts + Culture. |
