Bernard Kinsey is an art collector and philanthropist who was born on September 20, 1943, in West Palm Beach, Florida. He graduated from Florida A&M University in 1967 and was hired as the first African American sales representative for Humble Oil Company. Kinsey later worked at Xerox Corporation and became its vice president within ten years. In 1992, he became the chief operating officer and co-chairman of Rebuild Los Angeles, where he generated over $380 million dollars in investments for inner-city Los Angeles. Kinsey currently serves as the president of KBK Enterprises, a management consulting firm, and is a recognized expert and leader in the field of urban revitalization and economic development.
Along with his wife Shirley, the Kinseys have become known for their collection of African-American art, books, and manuscripts that document and tell the story of African American triumphs and struggles from 1600 to present. “The Kinsey Collection: Shared Treasures of Bernard and Shirley Kinsey – Where Art and History Intersect” has been on national tour to six cities and opened at the National Museum of American History, Smithsonian Institution, on October 12, 2010. The collection was chosen by the Florida Department of Education as the curriculum to teach African American studies to 3.6 million children statewide. |
