historical notes
|
Penney was a lawyer, civic worker, philanthropist, explorer, collector and scholar.
Penney collected modern and contemporary art. He
amassed a collection of works by Charles Burchfield, which he donated in 1993, along with works by Western New York state artists and objects from the Arts and Crafts Movement, to the Burchfield Center, Buffalo, N.Y., which was renamed the Burchfield-Penney Center in his honor.
The remainder of his collection consisted of works by modern and contemporary artists of national and international repute. He was guided in his purchases by Buffalo and New York City dealers James and Merle Goodman.
In 1989, the Explorers Club of New York City elected Dr. Penney a fellow, recognizing his extraordinary accomplishments as an international traveler. He is one of only three Western New Yorkers to be given this honor. Dr. Penney is also a member of the Grolier Club, the Library Club of New York, the Pan-American Exposition 1901 Collectors’ Society and the Yale Club in New York among others.
