Roy Rothschild Neuberger was an art patron, collector of American Art, investment banker and founder of the investment firm Neuberger & Berman.
The Neuberger collection included sculptures and paintings by, among others, Crawford, Dove, Feininger, Catch, Cottlieb, Graves, Hartley, Hofmann, Holty, Jules, Katzman, Kienbusch, Lawrence, Pollock, Rattner, Tamayo, Avery, de Kooning, Tobey and Weber.
Neuberger was the president of the American Federation of the Arts, 1958-1968; a trustee and member of Friends of the Whitney Museum of American Art; honorary trustee of the Metropolitan Museum of Art; member of the executive committee of the Council of Friends, Institute of Fine Arts, New York University; and many other positions and memberships.
A large part of his private art collection was donated to the Roy R. Neuberger Museum of the State University of New York College at Purchase. Other works from his collection reside in the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Museum of Modern Art.
In 1969, at the request of Governor Nelson Rockefeller, he donated a significant portion of his collection, more than 900 works, to New York State to establish the Neuberger Museum of Art (NMA) at Purchase College. Designed by Phillip Johnson the Museum opened in 1974.
His wife Marie Salant Neuberger died in 1997, the Neuberger’s had been married for 65 years and had three children: Ann Neuberger Aceves of Santa Fe, N.M.; Roy S. Neuberger of Lawrence, N.Y, and James A. Neuberger of New York City.
