historical notes Duncan Philips was an art collector, patron, critic.

Born in Pittsburgh—the grandson of James Laughlin, a banker and cofounder of the Jones and Laughlin Steel Company—he and his family moved to Washington, D.C. in 1895. After the deaths of his father and brother, he and his mother, Eliza Laughlin Phillips, established The Phillips Memorial Gallery.

Phillips collection included work by, among others, Cézanne, Braques, Matisse, Dove, Marin, Avery and Rothko.
