historical notes Albert Eugene Gallatin was an artist, author, and art collector.

Gallatin formed a collection of modern art and displayed it as the Gallery of Living Art (later Museum of Living Art) at NYU from 1907-1943, when he then moved it to the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Gallatin’s collection included work by Carl Paul Jennewein, Cézanne, Picasso, Georges Braque, Henri Matisse, Robert Delaunay, Léger, Max Beerbohm, Max Beerbohm, Amedée Ozenfant, Mondrian, Theo van Doesburg, Naum Gabo, El Lissitsky, Pavel Tchelichew, Max Ernst, Mirò, Jean Arp, André Masson, James McNeil Whistler and others.

Gallatin inherited works of art once owned by his great grandfather, Albert Gallatin (1761-1849) they included work by, among others, Bartolomé Esteban Murillo and Jean-Antoine Houdon.

Gallatin left his collection of drawings by Aubrey Beardsley to Princeton University.
