historical notes Herbert Stephen Adler was an art collector, businessman, and philanthropist. Adler was the first vice president and treasurer of E. M. Warburg, Pincus Co., Inc., and a general partner of Lionel L. Pincus Co.

Herbert and his wife, the former Mrs. Susan R. Simon, formed a collection of American graphic arts: drawings, pastels and watercolors.

The collection includes work by, among others, Louis Lozowic, William Michael Harnett, Winslow Homer, Childe Hassam, Mary Cassatt, Thomas Dewing, Robert Henri, William Glackens, John Sloan, and Everett Shinn. Maurice Prendergast, Arthur B. Davies, Paul Cadmus and Lilian Hale, Elie Nadelman, Maurice Sterne, Joseph Stella, George Bellows, Oscar Bluernner, John Marin, Louis Lozowicks, Thomas Hart Benton, Isabel Bishop, Reginald Marsh, Ben Shahn, Robert Vickrey, and Charles White.
