Bancroft, Samuel, 1840-1915 print view role Collector dates 1840-1915 city Wilmington state DE sex M historical notes Samuel Bancroft was a businessman and with his wife, Mary R. Bancroft, formed a collection of Pre-Raphaelite art. The strength of Bancroft's collection was established by the end of the 19th century, though Bancroft continued to add to it until his death, and the collection eventually comprised over one hundred paintings and drawings, many prints, over two hundred and fifty early photographic reproductions, a valuable literary manuscript collection, a library on Pre-Raphaelite art and the associated literature of the period, and complete records concerning his acquisitions. During the nineteenth and twentieth centuries the Bancrofts manufactured textile products in family owned and -operated factories and mills in many locations that included Canada, Delaware, New York, and Pennsylvania.
