historical notes Charles Lang Freer was a Detroit industrialist, collector and founder of the Freer Gallery of Art. He was the son of Jacob R. Freer and Phoebe Jane Townsend. Freer never married.

Freer although known principally as a collector of Asian art also collected American, and European art, including a large collection of works by James McNeill Whistler.
