historical notes Colonel Friedsam was an art collector, philanthropist, and known for his civic, social, and educational involvement.

Friedsam was named as heir and associate to Benjamin Altman and received his library, some of his paintings, and his home.

Friedsam bequeathed his art collection to the Metropolitan Art Museum. His collection included French Primitives, Netherlandish Primitives, French Paintings, Italian Paintings, Flemish and Dutch Paintings of XVII Century, Paintings of the XVIII and XIX Centuries; European Decorative Arts - Sculpture, Ceramics, Enamels, Crystals, Metalwork, Jewels, Furniture, Tapestries and Textiles; Oriental and Decorative Arts - Chinese Porcelains, Jades, and other Semiprecious Stones, Japanese Arms, and Near Eastern Decorative Arts.
