George Jay Gould was a collector, yachtsman, sportsman, railroad man, and son of railroad magnate and financier, Jay Gould (1836-1892).
The Gould collection included paintings, tapestries, prints, engravings, sculpture, decorative arts and miniature portraits on ivory. Among other works of art, Gould owned the "Duchess of Marlborough," by Sir Joshua Reynolds, "Professor Abel", by Gainsborough, "Duchess of Beaufort by Hopper, and a "Portrait of Richard Brinsley Sheridan" by Romney.
Lent work to the Hudson-Fulton Celebration, 1909, Aeybert Cuyp, Milking Time, now in an unknown collection, Meindert Hobemma's Road in the Woods, and Rembrandt's Study of an Old Man and The Standard-Bearer.
Gould was married twice; his first wife was actress Edith Kingdon, d 1921 (married 1886), and his second marriage, in 1922, was actress Guinevere Sinclair Jay Gould. Guinevere married again in 1925, to the Earl of Midleton heir, Viscount George St. John Brodrick Dunsford.
