Guggenheim married Irene Rothchild (1868-1954), a philanthropist interested in child development and the arts, in 1895. Upon their deaths, the estates they left helped build the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (SRGM) and its Foundation.

Guggenheim amassed a large collection of abstract and modern art which included work by Rudolph Bauer, Heinrich Campendonk, Marc Chagall, Robert Delaunay, Lyonal Feininger, Albert Gleizes, Vasily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Fernand Leger, Franz Marc, Amadeo Modigliani, Ladislaus Moholy-Nagy, Otto Nebel, Ben Nicolson, Pablo Picasso, Georges-Pierre Seurat and Edward Wadsworth.

Guggenheim was a member of the Bankers, Lotos, Engineers and Columbia Yacht Clubs, the American Institute of Minding and Metallurgical, Engineers Club, the City Athletic club, Country Club of Charleston, SC, Walterboro Country Club and Sands Point Bath and Golf Clubs.
