President and Chairman of the Board of Directors of May Department Stores Company, founded by his grandfather, David A. May. One of the founders of the Arts and Education Council of Greater St. Louis. Member of the St. Louis Symphony Executive Committee. Trustee of St. Louis Art Museum and founding member of Board of Commissioners. Member of the Washington University Visiting Committee for the Arts, and the National Business Committee for the Arts. Graduated from Dartmouth College. Has paintings and photographs in public and private collections. Primary areas of interest in collecting were Pre-Columbian, Oceanic, and German Expressionist art.

May bequest 1,600 works of art to the St. Louis Art Museum consists of 110 European and American works, most of them German Expressionist paintings, and about 1,500 pieces from Africa, Oceania and the Americas.

May collected paintings by Picasso, Georges Rouault, Lyonel Feininger, Ernest Ludwig Kirchner, Emil Nolde, Wassily Kandinsky, Oskar Kokoschka, Franz Marc and Paula Modersohn-Becker.
