titleTom Ryan papers, 1859-2002.
repositoryNational Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum
descriptionPapers of Tom Ryan, a contemporary western artist and photographer whose work documents the life of the working cowboy, especially on the famed 6666 Ranch of King County, Texas. The bulk of the collection consists of over 31,000 prints, negatives and slides, most of which were taken on the 6666 Ranch. Included is a small amount of biographical material covering Ryan's family, early career, military service, and some of the artistic awards earned during his career. The correspondence is mostly professional, covering his relationship with New York western art and rare books deal Helen L. Card, Brown & Bigelow art director Clair Fry, and insurance executive and art collector Frank Harding.

Another focus of the correspondence is his relationship with his fellow contemporary western artists, and especially the members of the Cowboy Artists of America. The period in the late 1960s and early 1970s when Ryan held leadership positions in the organization is especially well documented. The financial material is primarily concerned with the sale of Ryan's art including both original art and limited edition prints. Some of Ryan's book purchases, primarily volumes illustrated by Howard Pyle and N.C. Wyeth, are also covered in the financial material. The publications series includes art exhibition catalogues and brochures as well as several of Helen Card's Latendorf Bookshop catalogues from the early 1960s. The reference files include both factual information and images, which Ryan collected as reference for his early historical western illustration work. Ryan's artwork is extensively documented in the collection, both by photographs and manuscript material. Included are examples of his early paperback book cover and magazine illustration work, as well as notes, sketches, and other material covering his completed fine art work. A unique group of over 100 controlled palettes help document more than 25 Ryan paintings. There is also some material on proposed artwork and other painting ideas. There are many subject files on topics not directly related to the production of Ryan's art, but other subjects of note include Ryan and his artwork; the Cowboy Artists of America; notes, sketches, and painted class exercises from lectures given by Art Students League instructor Frank Reilly; and information about the 6666 Ranch and its cowboys.
The photographs consist of a limited number of photos covering to the Cowboy Artists of America, some personal photographs of the Ryan family, publicity photos, and photographs taken at rodeos. The overwhelming majority of the photographs are either reference images for Ryan's artwork or photographs of ranch life, mostly taken on the 6666 Ranch in King County, Texas. The reference images include movie stills that Ryan collected from a variety of western films, as well as a large number of posed and candid photographs related to artwork from all phases of Ryan's career. The photographic prints often include notes and sketches showing how the images were to be utilized in the finished artwork. The ranch photography covers all aspects of the working life of a large cattle ranch, and includes images from the 1960s that document ranch activities and practices that are now rarely seen.
