| description | Correspondence; writings and lecture notes; scrapbooks; photographs; and clippings relating to Woodward's career as an art critic for the Christian Science Monitor and as director of the Casson Galleries. REELS D194-D196: Ca. 1,500 letters, 1830-1931, the bulk received by Woodward in his capacity as art critic of the Christian Science Monitor and as the director of the Casson Galleries. There are also many unrelated artists' letters collected by Woodward, among them several to autograph collector Ben W. Austin (1872-1895), a few to William Macbeth, one each from Thomas Sully (1836), Frederic Edwin Church (1857), Luigi Calamatta (1865), Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema (1877), Frederic Edwin Church (1857), Frederick Stuart Church (1885), John Singer Sargent, and other nineteenth century artists. Some of the Monitor correspondence is addressed to George S. Leonard, and some of the Casson Galleries to Mr. [Nathaniel] Vose. Also included are ca. 45 letters to Woodward from his brother Stanley. Enneking, Anna S. Fisher, Gertrude Fiske, Arthur C. Goodwin, Frederic M. Grant, Lilian W. Hale, A. H. Knighton Hammond, Martin Hardie, Robert Henri, Aldro T. Hibbard, William V. Higgins, C. Lewis Hind (14 letters and 6 published art manuscripts, 91 pgs.), Harry L. Hoffman, Lester G. Hornby, Felicie W. Howell, Wilson H. Irvine, Bertha E. Jaques, Philip Kappel, Elizabeth Keith, Paul King, Elinor B. Komroff, Carl Lawless, Bert Levy, Philip Little, William Meyerowitz, Frederick J. Mulhaupt, Herman D. Murphy, Hobart Nichols, Thornton Oakley, Walter Pach, Elizabeth R. Pennell (13 manuscripts and 70 letters), Charles H. Pepper, Henry R. Poore, Elizabeth W. Roberts, Percival L. Rosseau, Carl C. M. Rungius, Chauncey F. Ryder, Paul E. Saling, Leopold G. Seyffert, Robert Spencer, George G. Symons, Henry E. Tuttle, Harry A. Vincent, Frederick J.Waugh, and Frederick B. Williams. REEK 439-440 AND SCANNED Two photographs, one of J.F. Bouchor and one of Johnnes Adam S. Oertel, both of which were previously microfilmed under Photos of Artists I and have subsequently been scanned and returned to the Woodward papers. UNMICROFILMED: Correspondence, 1910-1963, mainly letters from Woodward's brother, marine painter Stanley; writings and lecture notes; 2 personal photographs and reference photographs of paintings; 2 scrapbooks containing clippings of Woodward's "Art News and Comment" column from the THE CHRISTIAN SCIENCE MONITOR, 1920-1933; a scrapbook of reviews, exhibition catalogs and announcements from the Casson Galleries, 1922-1932; a scrapbook purchased by Woodward containing letters, autographs, photos, and reproductions from 78 artists, ca. 1900-1930, books on art; exhibition catalogs; and clippings. Also included are a photograph of Italian painter Antonio Rotta, ca. 1890, and one of Thomas Alexander Harrison, inadvertently not filmed on reel D196; they originally accompanied letters sent to autograph collector Ben Austin. |
