REELS D194-D196: Ca. 1,500 letters, 1830-1931, the bulk received by Woodward in his capacity as art critic of the Christian Science Monitor and as the director of the Casson Galleries. There are also many unrelated artists' letters collected by Woodward, among them several to autograph collector Ben W. Austin (1872-1895), a few to William Macbeth, one each from Thomas Sully (1836), Frederic Edwin Church (1857), Luigi Calamatta (1865), Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema (1877), Frederic Edwin Church (1857), Frederick Stuart Church (1885), John Singer Sargent, and other nineteenth century artists. Some of the Monitor correspondence is addressed to George S. Leonard, and some of the Casson Galleries to Mr. [Nathaniel] Vose. Also included are ca. 45 letters to Woodward from his brother Stanley.

Also included are a photograph of Italian painter Antonio Rotta, ca. 1890, and one of Thomas Alexander Harrison, inadvertently not filmed on reel D196; they originally accompanied letters sent to autograph collector Ben Austin. |
