title | Wiles Family Papers, 1850 – 1991 | repository | Southold Historical Society |
description | The collection is divided into six series: the Gladys and Irving Wiles Collection; Correspondence from Lemuel & Rachel to Irving; Correspondence of Irving & May with each other; Correspondence of Irving , Gladys, and William R. Jepson; Catalogs, Notebooks, Photos, & Drawings; and Additional Wiles Family Correspondence. The bulk of the collection pertains to the daily lives of the Wiles family, including thoughts on contemporary art of the period, exhibitions, teaching, private family matters, etc. Of special note are two manuscripts listing works by both Lemuel and Irving over the course of their long careers. Some of the papers are brittle and should be handled with care. Abstract The Wiles family were a group of important American artists, mainly associated with the State of New York. Lemuel (1826-1905) was a noted Hudson River School painter while his son, Irving (1861-1905), and granddaughter, Gladys (1888-1983), became noted impressionist portrait painters. Both Irving and Gladys achieved the rank of “N.A.” from the National Academy of Art and Design in New York, the highest ranking in American art. Lemuel’s wife, Rachel (1827-1898), was also a painter. The material ranges in date from 1850 – 1990. |
