descriptionNotebooks containing Pippin's reminiscences of his World War I experiences; 1 letter by Pippin. Three notebooks and a fragment of a notebook (ca. 1920) recount Pippin's "life story of art" and describe his World War I experiences in the 15th New York Infantry and as a corporal in the 369th Colored Infantry Regiment at Chateau-Thierry, Soissons, the Argonne and elsewhere in France. Pippin writes of life in the trenches, night forays into no man's land, gas attacks, artillery bombardments, and losing his platoon to machine gun fire. One notebook is illustrated with pencil and crayon drawings of the 369th in action. Also, a letter addressed, ca. 1935, to "My Dear Friends," disscussing his first experinces creating artwork.
