Papers of Gideon Nye, Jr. (1812-1888) of the Dartmouth branch of the family, who went to Canton, China, with a cousin, Francis S. Hathaway in 1833, and remained there until his death, relating to his involvement with the China trade (especiallly tea) and his service as U.S. vice consul at Canton, include essays, lectures, and editorials, pertaining to the China trade, daily life and his experiences in China, the Opium War (1840-1842), Taiping Rebellion (1850-1864), and foreign intervention in China; business and personal correspondence (1845-1888); catalogs and exhibition (New York, N.Y.) materials reflecting his collection of "Old Masters" (1848-1858); obituaries; biographical sketches; and newspaper clippings and programs. Papers of Fairhaven family members including Thomas (1768-1842) Nye and his two sons, William C. (b. 1792) and Philip (1799-1858), merchants, ship captains, and owners of vessels involved in foreign trade, containing ship's papers of brigs Fornax, Indian Chief, and Parthian; and papers of members of the Tobey (Toby/Tobie) family, of Sandwich, Mass., and other Nye relatives.

Persons represented include Stephen Hathaway (1743-1826); Abigail Tobey (1783-1868), Asa Russell (1808 or 9-1858), George (1812-1847), James Sellers (1806-1881), Jonathan (1760-1815), and Obed (1736-1815) Nye; and Eliakim (1711-1780), Hannah (d. 1825), Jonathan Burr (b. 1794), and William (1751-ca. 1819) Tobey.

descriptionThe papers include correspondence (comprising over half of the collection), manuscripts of Samuel Wells Williams's Syllabic Dictionary of the Chinese Language, themes and lecture notes by Frederick Wells Williams, diaries, newspaper clippings, articles on China, maps, and pictures.

The bulk of the correspondence relates to S.W. Williams, missionary, diplomat, and Sinologue. The period between 1845 and 1855 has extensive correspondence with missionaries and with James Dwight Dana and Matthew C. Perry, whom Williams accompanied on his mission to open Japan and on his return visit in 1854. Williams's letters to friends and family comment on progress made and their reception in Japan. In 1856 Williams became secretary and interpreter to the American Legation in China and many of the letters refer to Chinese problems of the following 20 years.

His correspondents include, in addition to Dana and Perry, Anson Burlingame, Hamilton Fish, Asa Gray, Frederick Low, William Bradford Reed, and William Henry Seward. The remaining correspondence covers the period 1885 to 1939, encompassing the correspondence of F.W. Williams, Yale professor, and Wayland Wells Williams, writer.

Biographical and Historical Note
Samuel Wells Williams (1812-1884): missionary to China, 1833-1845; printer and author; helped prepare Chinese dictionary; accompanied Perry expedition to Japan as interpreter in 1853-1854; in 1856 became secretary and interpreter of the American Legation to China, and remained until 1876; in 1877 became professor of Chinese at Yale University./ Frederick Wells Williams (1857-1928): writer and teacher; from 1893-1925, professor of oriental history at Yale University; active in administration of Yale-in-China from 1901-1928.
