title | S.D. Warren Company: research collection, 1974-1975. | repository | Maine Historical Society |
description | This collection consists of correspondence, notes, printed material, pamphlets and newsletters. Joyce Butler gathered this material in preparation for writing an article on S.D. Warren's revolutionary treatment of his workers. Biographical and Historical Note S.D. Warren, in addition to owning the paper mill in Westbrook, Maine, was an early proponent of humane treatment for his workers. He built for his workers, safe, affordable housing, a library, schools and public meeting areas. His ideas were so revolutionary for their time, he was asked to testify before Congress. His generous nature meant he was well-liked by all his workers and his death was truly mourned. Location Me Hist Soc Stacks Call Number Coll. 2168 |
