titlePhotothèque Archives
repositoryWildenstein Plattner Institute
descriptionThe Photothèque Archives (c. 1773–1999) consist of digitized black and white photographs from the Wildenstein Institute's photothèque. The three series include photographs of gallery and museum exhibitions, photographs of artworks by 18th and 19th century women artists, and studio photographs of artist models. It is unclear for what purpose most of these photographs were used, but all materials within the collection have an association with Wildenstein family's activities in New York or Paris, and/or with the publishing endeavors of Georges Wildenstein (1892–1963) and his son Daniel Wildenstein (1917–2001). The Wildensteins are a family of successful art dealers and gallery owners who have been dealing art since the 19th century, specializing in Old Master and Impressionist works. In 1970 Daniel founded the Wildenstein Institute, an organization dedicated to art historical research. He ran this Institute until 2001, after which his son Guy assumed control. The Wildenstein Institute's Photothèque was transferred to the Wildenstein Plattner Institute in 2016 with the aim of encouraging art appreciation, advancing the knowledge of works of art, and fostering public access to historical records.
