REELS 3060-3089: School and military records, passports, appointment and address books and other biographical, personal and financial documents; correspondence, 1906-1975, with colleagues, museums, galleries, dealers, collectors, publishers and others; clippings, and other printed research material; notes, writings and bibliographies; typescripts of lectures; subject and research files on the protection of art during WWII, art in Germany after the war, art committees and organizations, art collections in the U.S., England and elsewhere, museums and galleries, trips and tours, artists, schools of art, technical aspects of painting and museum work and exhibitions; and photographs of Constable, his family, friends, colleagues, and works of art.

UNMICROFILMED: Research files (1922-1981; 4 ft.) assembled by Constable while writing his book CANALETTO: GIOVANNI ANTONIO CANAL, 1697-1768. The files relate to Italian and British artists, including Canaletto, Luca Carlevaris, Francesca Guradi, Antonia Joli, and Samuel Scott; followers and imitators, the Vedute painters, patrons, theatrical design, watercolor in England, and European collections. Joseph G. Links has annotated the material.

Also, letters of condolence upon Constable's death; tributes to him; correspondence with Oxford University Press, 1976-1981; an address book; a poem by Constable; clippings; and "one of WGC's eyebrow hairs somewhat shortened by burning" (1936).

Links borrowed the material from Constable for revision of the book.

He discusses his relationship with collectors, the development of Candian, British and American museums, as well as reminiscing about key figures such as art historian Roger Fry and painters Renoir, and Degas.

descriptionCorrespondence, memoranda, board minutes, policy statements, telegrams, and printed materials, chiefly relating to Defenbacher's activities as director of the Walker Art Center and his creation of an exhibits program in contemporary fine and applied arts with an emphasis on modern architecture and design. Includes files on the T.B. Walker collection, an eclectic ensemble of old master paintings, Chinese jades, Egyptian jewelry, and other objects, acquired by Walker between 1879 and 1927, and researched in the 1940s by art scholars such as W.G. Constable, Lloyd Goodrich, and Julius Held; and Defenbacher's personal correspondence when he was affiliated with the Federal Art Project (Works Projects Administration). Correspondents include curatorial staff: William M. Friedman, Norman Geske, and Hilde Reiss; Hudson Walker, art dealer and grandson of Walker Art Center founder T.B. Walker; artists including Berenice Abbott, Fernand Léger, and Max Weber; and colleagues from other museums such as Daniel Catton Rich (Art Institute of Chicago), Henri Marceau (Philadelphia Museum of Art), and Edgar Kaufman, Jr. (Museum of Modern Art).

Biographical Note
Director, Walker Art Center (1940-1951); from 1935-1939 worked for Federal Art Project, setting up over 70 community art centers; after his tenure at Walker, became director of Fort Worth Museum of Art and later president of California College of Arts and Crafts.

Includes letters and receipts documenting commissioning and purchase by

William Constable (1812) and transfers to his daughter Anna Maria Constable Pierrepont (1848) and to her son Henry Evelyn Pierrepont (1850-53). Also includes correspondence with Stephen van Renssalaer re Hezekiah Beers Pierpont's offer of portrait to U.S. Congress (1826); letters re critical reaction, including by people who had known Washington, history of the painting, proposed and executed copies; correspondence with George C. Mason and Scribner's Sons re publication of "Stuart's Life and Works" (1878-80); letters from John A. Stevens, editor, "Magazine of American History," re Washington issue (1878-80); and receipts for framing, restoration, and reproduction expenses.

Also includes notes on the history and provenance of the painting, particularly "Memorandums and recollections in relation to the full-length portrait of George Washington by Gilbert Stuart in 1796 for my father William Constable," by Anna M. Pierrepont (1848), and publications, including exhibition catalogs (1853-80), essays, and newspaper clippings (1824-76).
