Accession 2857-004 primarily documents Monsen's research and writing as a professor of business, while accessions 2857-001 and 2857-005 primarily document his work as an art collector.

Biographical Note:
R. Joseph Monsen was born on March 13, 1931, in Payson, Utah. He earned a bachelor of science degree from the University of Utah in 1953, a master of arts degree from Stanford University in 1954, and a Ph.D. from the University of California in 1960. He held the position of assistant professor of economics at Brigham Young University from 1960 to 1963, when he accepted an appointment as associate professor in the Department of Business, Government, and Society at the University of Washington. He remained at the University of Washington, serving as acting chairman of the Department of Business, Government and Society from 1965 to 1968 and chairman from 1973-1981. He spent the year 1971-1972 as visiting professor of public policy in the Stanford Graduate School of Business. From 1985 until his retirement from the University of Washington, he was professor of management and organization.

Monsen’s research interests were varied and he published many books and articles in such fields of study as capitalist, socialist, and communist economic systems; international business; and the management and control of nationalized companies. R. Joseph Monsen and his wife, Elaine, are collectors of ceramics and photography.
